Armada Sails are specialists in Yacht, Motorboat and Dinghy Canvas Covers and we are New Sails Distributors for Hyde Sails for the South West region. We re branded to our new name in June 2013 as formally we were known as Slik Cut of Mount Batten, Plymouth. We are in a great location as it has such easy, quick access by road and by sea. Armada Sails is a local family business and is owned and run by the Shelmerdine family. Richard and James have been sailing since knee high to a grass hopper and both originally learnt to sail with The Island Cruising Club from Egremont, the old Mersey Ferry based in Salcombe. Richard’s mother Judy Shelmerdine, who lives in Hope Cove, Nr Salcombe was one of the founder members of The Island Cruising Club. Richard is regularly seen before the mast flying Spinnakers in various Yacht Club races. Dinghy racing and teaching is James’ forte. He recently graduated to Dinghy Senior Instructor matching his windsurfing qualifications. When Richard and James can be dragged off the water they can be found working hard sitting at the industrial sailmaker sewing machines at Armada Sails. They offer new Sails and New Canvas for both Dinghies and Yachts and a full repair and valeting service. Following a Laundry valeting service by Tip Top Sail Laundry of Southampton they can stitch new Sail U/V Sacrificial Strips and restitch your sail covers and sprayhoods as required. Armada Sails pride themselves on friendly advice and knowledgeable service. We are looking forward to speaking to you soon. We are here to help.

Banks Sails have been at the forefront of modern sailmaking for fifty years. The company was founded by Bruce Banks, a brilliant helmsman and sailmaker. Our first loft was opened in Sarisbury, Southampton, in 1962, and remains to this day our international headquarters. Ken Rose, the internationally renowned sail designer, joined us in 1964, and before long developed the revolutionary tri-radial spinnaker - the Banks Starcut. The Starcut set a new standard and every serious ocean racer had one in his inventory. In 1969 we became the first sailmaker to install a computer for sail design - our Stantec Zebra valve computer is now a museum piece! Ken's Checkmate design system, which was introduced in 1983, was the first program able to shape sails vertically and horizontally at the same time, making full use of the new generation of kevlar/mylar fabrics. Bank Sails continues to integrate the very latest in technology with proven craftsmanship on the loft floor. Every sail is an individual labour of love. In 1999 we were delighted to announce that we were to merge with Ratsey & Lapthorn of Cowes, Isle of Wight, thereby forming the largest British sailmaker. Today we have an enviable network of international lofts and a reputation for continued excellence in all fields of sail design, be it racing, cruising or one design.

Like many of the successful sail lofts in the world, Hyde Sails grew from racing and in particular racing one-design dinghies. The need to eke out small differences in performance between identical boats imposes values of quality and discipline in the manufacture of sails that are not so important in other branches of sailmaking. But the challenge of making sails of exactly the right shape, with top class materials and faultless craftsmanship permeates through all the sails we make from racing yacht to old gaffer. Established over 40 years ago as Musto and Hyde , our famous red Flying Dutchman logo reflected Keith Musto's Olympic success in that iconic dinghy. He went on to establish his very successful clothing range while the sailmaking business spread to encompass sailmaking for all types of boat of all types and sizes. Hyde Sails have one of the biggest product ranges of any sailmaker in the world from Optimist dinghies to round the globe cruisers. We make around 40000 sails per year from our modern ( and crucially, wholly owned ) factory in the far east. Our 235 staff are highly trained , well paid and directed from the UK where our management ,sales and R&D functions are based in two offices, one at Hamble and one at Ipswich. We have a worldwide and increasing network of agents and distributors , whose details are on this site, enabling you to obtain personal service over much of the Globe. We make many sails for other sailmakers and for large boat builders such as Laser and RS but our core business is making bespoke sails for individual customers. Our sails are made out of the best materials obtained at the most competitive prices so that we are able to offer quality sails with extraordinary craftsmanship at prices that are keen but not unrealistically cheap. With sailmaking you tend to get what you pay for but there is no need to pay over the odds to get quality sails - we do not promise the cheapest sails, but we promise the best quality at the best price with the best designs and the best materials. If those sound like the sort of sails you are looking for, whatever your type of boat, then contact us and we will be delighted to discuss your needs and provide you with a no-obligation quote.

Kemp Sails have a very strong ethos of quality and fairness for our customers and so whilst it's hard to 'please everybody, all of the time', we have gone to some quite extreme lengths on occasions to ensure that our customers get the quality of service and product that they expected and deserved. Many of our staff have been Sailmaking or in the Marine Industry for many years and we don't hide from our customers - you'll find us at most of the major UK boatshows and we are always happy to talk and answer questions, whether it be about a Drascombe or a Discovery Yacht, or a Sigma or a Swan. Many of our Sailmakers are keen Sailors and racers, several have done Fastnets and Transatlantic crossings and some have competed in races at National and International level. If you'd like to know more about the team at Kemp Sails then check out our Key Staff's 'Biog' page Certainly Sailmaking is a complicated area. There are thousands of different boat types, mast types and rig setups, so whilst boats may appear very similar at first glance - many people have underestimated just how much experience and knowledge goes into making sails and in getting the correct fit and result. Probably for this reason, many attempts to standardise and simplify the sailmaking process have resulted in poorly fitting products and even company failure. At Kemp Sails we'll guide you through the Sail buying process and ask the right questions, with knowledge gained through well learned lessons understood from years of experience. If there are ever any questions then you can depend on a company that is based right here and can attend to any concerns. As a cottage industry there will always be somebody offering a 'low cost alternative' which can sound attractive.... but normally these offers mean they don't have the level of infrastructure or machinery that is required to do the job correctly, and sadly transpires to be a more costly or dissatisfying experience in the long run - so our Kemp Sails' prices are usually keen, and our service consistent and dependable.....chances are, we may well exceed your expectations!
